Kumasi: Traders ‘Suffocating’ Under High Taxes

Traders in the Ashanti Region fear their businesses risk collapsing due to exorbitant taxes and constant frustrations from officials of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service.

According to the traders, activities of the Customs officials will chase them out of business if President Akufo Addo does not intervene by calling the officials to order.

Speaking to host of Abusua Nkommo, Kwame Adinkra, one of the traders, Ewurabena Kuffour says the rate at which the Customs and other revenue officials have been on their neck is becoming alarming.

According to Ewurabena, “at every kilometer on the road from Aflao, we are stopped by customs people who take delight in extorting huge sums of monies from us.”

“Kwame, it’s as if they planned everything, immediately after paying monies to these officials, you are most likely to be stopped at the next bust stop.”

“What’s more worrying is that, a lot of these officials are from the Volta Region and as soon as you mention your name that suggests you are an Ashanti, then your case is different,” she alleged.

“Kwame, when these officials stop you, they can take Ghc30,000 from you and issue you with two different receipts one of which is Ghc10,000. The Ghc10,000 receipt is paid into government coffers but the remaining Ghc20,000 goes into their personal pockets,” Ewurabena revealed.

“There are two men at the head office of the Customs office who are behind these extortion practices…one Dan Coffie and the other is George Angel, President Akufo Addo must take action on these people,” she alleged.

Ewurabena added, “the extortion activities usually take place at Aflao and Akatsi areas through to Ashaiman and Spintex roundabout.”
