Despite efforts by government to stop Chinese nationals in Ghana from illegal mining and other retail trading, the Chinese seem to be devising other means of livelihood.
In the midst of raging war against illegal mining by the Chinese, a young Chinese has taken up the job of taxi driving in Accra.
This comes at a time when there is growing concerns over the increasing spate at which foreigners, especially, the Chinese are venturing into businesses reserved for Ghanaians.
The Akufo-Addo led administration declared ‘war’ on persons involved in the illegal mining businesses. Over the period, over 500 excavators and earthmoving equipment have voluntarily withdrawn after the sector minister’s 21-day ultimatum to Chinese “galamsey” operations.
Meanwhile, some Chinese galamseyers have also been arrested during the crackdown period. The intriguing question is, are the Chinese taking over businesses like taxi driving reserved for the locals?
